Software leaders and execs: There is a tried and true hiring process that I have used (refined) over the years of hiring both technical and non-technical staff (including executives). Building your teams using a service like LinkedIn, Ziprecruiter, Indeed, or recruiters or DYI, the process works. The process recognizes that a lot of frogs need to be kissed to get to your prince or princess (metaphorically speaking). If you want a copy of the spreadsheet and methods, message me and I will send it to you (no fee). The great thing about this process is 1) it can really help you hire correctly for the position, 2) is repeatable works for any position, 3) assumes that all candidates are valuable people and treats them as such (never say never), and 4) will keep you organized and felling in control, 5) provides the cover you need to ensure that you adhere to best hiring practices.
Start with a carefully crafted description of the position. What are the objectives, goals, and now will you measure success. Which are the key soft skills needed to be successful in the organization? Everything is not critical, decide which three skills, experience, etc. are THE most important for success in your company. Once you have well formed description, and you understand the success metrics, the process starts with casting a net. However you attract resumes, create a folder structure to classify incoming resumes: Received, Consider, No, and Maybe.
- Sort resumes as they are received.
- Put the Consider candidates into the spreadsheet
- Schedule a 20 minute phone screen.
- Availability?
- Location?
- Tell me your story, please include in your story the following three things: 1) startup experience, 2) SaaS software experience, 3) Cloud platform experience. And also, what attracted you to the company and the position?
- Of the 20 minutes allotted for the call, the candidate should talk 18. In other words, dont talk, listen
- The last question is always the same: Did you get a chance to do some research on our company? do you have any questions that I can answer?
This quick screen will tell you almost everything you need to know about fit. Next, we will consider the entire hiring process. If you want a copy of the spreadsheet and methods, message me and I will send it to you (there is no fee).
